Newsha Tavakolian (Tehran, 1981), is one of the most outstanding photographers emerging onto the international circuit from the Middle East.

She has been working as a professional photographer for the Iranian press since she was sixteen, primarily for reformist daily newspapers focusing on womens issues, which have since been banned by government authorities. In 2006, she was nominated Best Young Photographer by the magazine National Geographic, for her photo-essay titled Women in the Axis of Evil. Today she works as a regular collaborator for some of the most prominent international publications including Time Magazine, Newsweek, Stern, Le Figaro, Colors, the New York Times Magazine, Der Spiegel, Le Monde, NRC Handelsblad and The National Geographic.

She has covered conflicts in the Middle East, gender issues, and religious rituals such as the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Her documentary and photographic work have featured in a number of international festivals including Visa pour l’image de Perpignan (France) and the photojournalism festival in Gijón (Spain).

Her first solo project in Spain includes a series of photographic portraits and a six channel silent film - video installation.

On the 28th of July 2011, Tavakolian visits Palma de Mallorca to present the screening of her video-diary followed by a talk where she will discuss her role as a female artist with a particular interest in issues surrounding the role of women in the Middle East.

The exhibition has been organised by La Caja Blanca with the kind support of our partners: El Corte Inglés and La Agencia.

The conference has been organised by La Caja Blanca in collaboration with Es Baluard Museum.
